Katie Gartlan-Close (she/her) is a queer playwright, clown, and artist living in New Westminster on the lands of the Halkomelem speaking Peoples. She has an MSc in Playwriting from the University of Edinburgh, and a double major in Theatre Performance and Communications from Simon Fraser University. She tries to live with Bean’s sense of curiosity and emotional availability and Hat’s humour and confidence. She truly believes that “everything is temporary.”

and strives to enjoy life with a sprinkle of play and a whole lot of heart. Some of her previous work includes: Polar Opposites (Burnaby Summer Theatre), The Waiting Room (Developed in

the Arts Club Theatre’s Emerging Playwrights’ Unit 2021), The Fluff in our Walls (OR Festival 2021), and Cocoon (Canadian Play Thing Reading and Pride Plays 2020 in Edinburgh). For a long time, this show has been merely a fantasy, so you are all making her dreams come true by

entering the world of Bean & Hat!

Davey Samuel Calderon (He/They) is a director, curator, writer, producer, drag artist, dramaturg and settler on the unceded territories of hÉ™nÌ“qÌ“É™minÌ“É™mÌ“ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking Peoples. He is the Co-Founder of New(to)Town Collective, an emerging theatre collective which focuses on providing economically accessible (by donation or pay what you choose) theatre and performing arts workshops (known as Training Jams and Expanse Workshop) since 2016. Select directing credits include: UNSCRIPTED: The Frontliners by Zahida Rahemtulla (workshop direction, PTC's 2021 UNSCRIPTED), My Name is SUMIKO by June Fukumura (assistant director and 2019 Vancouver Fringe Festival), Bean and Hat / The Bug Zapper (2019 Speakeasy Theatre's Pull Festival). Bean & Hat have always had a special place in Davey's heart since directing the 10-minute version of it at Pull Festival back in 2019. He agrees with Bean & Hat that crickets are "beautiful in a way. But also, kind of scary." He pretends to be a Joey, but the Clown Gods have the most fun making him an Auguste.

Olivia Etey

Olivia Etey

Olivia Etey (she/her) is a Vancouver-based playwright, producer and the creator of the Or Festival. She graduated from UBC with a double major in Creative Writing and English Honours. Her produced plays include Foreplay (2015), her musical: The Midnight Serenade (2015), The Hoarder (2016), Living on The Grid (Only Animal, 2017), and her juke-box Opera Forever Hold Your Peace (Opera Unbound, 2022). Olivia's play Woman Against Gravity (2021) was showcased in the Stage One Festival of New Canadian Work at the Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary. Olivia is ecstatic to participate in Katie Gartlan-Close's magnificent clown show Bean & Hat. She has dreamt of seeing this production on the stage since she saw a 10-minute version in the Pull Festival VIII in 2019. She truly hopes you enjoy the magical world that Katie, Davey and the fabulous creative team created!
