Katie Gartlan-Close

Katie Gartlan-Close (she/her) is a queer playwright, clown, and artist living in New Westminster on the lands of the Halkomelem speaking Peoples. She has an MSc in Playwriting from the University of Edinburgh, and a double major in Theatre Performance and Communications from Simon Fraser University. She tries to live with Bean’s sense of curiosity and emotional availability and Hat’s humour and confidence. She truly believes that “everything is temporary.”

and strives to enjoy life with a sprinkle of play and a whole lot of heart. Some of her previous work includes: Polar Opposites (Burnaby Summer Theatre), The Waiting Room (Developed in

the Arts Club Theatre’s Emerging Playwrights’ Unit 2021), The Fluff in our Walls (OR Festival 2021), and Cocoon (Canadian Play Thing Reading and Pride Plays 2020 in Edinburgh). For a long time, this show has been merely a fantasy, so you are all making her dreams come true by

entering the world of Bean & Hat!

Thank you, and enjoy.

Please stay awhile.

Director Davey Samuel Calderon is sitting at his messy desk with the Bean & Hat script in his hand. He is wearing an orange shirt with pink pants.

Bean & Hat have always had a special place in Davey's heart since directing the 10-minute version of it at Pull Festival back in 2019. He agrees with Bean & Hat that crickets are "beautiful in a way. But also, kind of scary." He pretends to be a Joey, but the Clown Gods have the most fun making him an Auguste.
